Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer, was one of the first Roberts to settle in Atlanta. Her father was interested in theatre from a very young stage. While a student at Emory University he appeared in numerous productions at and off campus. Following his air force service In 1953, he starred in an airforce production in Biloxi along with Betty Lou Bredemus. The couple got married in 1955, and their first son Eric Anthony was born in 1956. Walter was studying at Tulane University, New Orleans Louisiana. In the year 1957, they left the airforce and Walter began studying at Tulane University. Walter joined Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio when they moved their family from Atlanta to Decatur, Georgia in 1960. Walter along with Betty Lou produced a Saturday matinee local TV show that was aimed at children, called Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964. It was a venture they self-financed. In 1964, Walter and Betty Lou founded the Actors and Writers Workshop. It lasted for 6 years. The couple had another two children: Lelisa Billingsley (1965) (also named Lisa), and Julia Billingsley (1967) (also known by the same name Julie).
